Just Breathe Deep!

Using the power of your breath you can create a more peaceful and healthier life. While we all need to breathe to stay living, learning to consciously use your breath can improve your mood, increase your energy, and strengthen your immune system.
I first discovered the benefits of conscious deep breathing during a meditation course I participated in shortly after my mom died. I can now stave off episodes of panic just by breathing deep and exhaling long and slowly. It is amazing! This conscious awareness of the in and out flow of my breath always works to calm my emotions and helps me gain perspective of any unsettling event I may find myself in. Breathing exercises can be done at home, at work, in your car, and even while grocery shopping. (Trust me, I’ve tried this!)
Breathing exercises are a wonderful way to reduce stress.Try this simple and quick breathing exercise to infuse your body + mind with peace during the busy holidays.
Find a place where you won’t be disturbed for a full minute, two is even better. Sit or stand up straight and focus on filling your lungs with a deep breath. Hold for a couple of seconds and then exhale slowly. Then repeat. Breathing and exhaling consciously will increase blood supply to every part of your body including your brain. You will feel the calm spread throughout your body. If you feel a little lightheaded at first, don’t be concerned; it will pass.
In Buddhist and yogic traditions, people claim to have reached an enlightened state by doing nothing more than paying attention to their breath. While you may not be on a quest for enlightenment you do have the power within you to reclaim and heal your life just by breathing consciously.
