Resistance

“The more important a project is to your soul’s evolution, the more you will resist it.” ~ Steven Pressfield
Do you feel it?

RESISTANCE.

Resistance is that invisible and insidious energy that shows up as fear, doubt, sadness, anxiety, or procrastination. It has the power to stop you dead in your tracks on your journey of self-love and transformation. Resistance can keep you from living the life you dream of.

Resistance appears whenever you start to make changes. It’s that feeling that surfaces when your heart is saying “yes” but your body and mind are saying “no”.

Take heart. Whenever that resistance shows up in your life it’s a sign that you are on the right path. And overcoming that resistance is essential to your transformation.

How do you do that?

First…breathe deep. Feel it. Surrender to it.

The energy needs to be released so give it space by journaling, talking to a friend, or having a good cathartic cry. Then take action.

Resistance is in fact your ally. It shows you what you need to do, Taking action is power and once you start to move forward a new energy and excitement will begin to fill that space.

Since the start of the New Year I knew my daughter and I would be facing a move, as our large family home would soon be too big for the two of us.

I had been feeling unsettled when I was presented with an opportunity to work in another city. Then resistance showed up.

I was afraid to leave my quiet island life and the home where my kids have grown up. There are memories on every corner and little handprints on every wall. While I was getting a sense that my adventure was not supposed to end there I was unable to commit to moving to another house in the same city or taking the leap back across the ocean to the mainland.

The decision of moving not only my life but also my daughter’s just seemed so huge.  I meditated and wrote in my journal on the question, “should I move or should I stay?”  Although the message I received was always the same, “its time to move” I continued to resist until the stress of no action made me take action and make a decision.  We are moving at the end of the month.

Once I made the decision I felt this incredible release of weight from my spirit. I felt lighter, inspired, and energized with this new purpose. I now see that the stress was yet another stepping stone I had to walk over to continue with my journey.

Resistance will show up when you are doing the work that has the power to transform you. By being aware of it, but not letting it derail your dreams, you can continue to move forward to the life you desire and deserve to live.

Where have you experienced resistance? I’d love to hear how you overcame it.

To fly we have to have resistance.” ~ Maya Lin
